A bank statement converter that checks its own work

Any converter can pull text out of a PDF. What matters is whether you can trust the result without checking every line yourself.

Try a fictional sample:

Works with text PDFs that have Date, Description, Paid in / Paid out (or Amount) and Balance columns. Scanned or photographed statements are not supported yet. The samples are fictional test data.

Five things a good bank statement converter should do

1. Prove the rows are complete

The statement’s running balance lets a converter check itself. Ask whether a tool recalculates the balance on every row and compares it with the printed figure, or just extracts text and leaves the checking to you. StatementToCSV checks every row and shows a difference of £0.00 when everything agrees.

2. Keep your statements private

Bank statements carry names, addresses, account numbers and a detailed picture of someone’s life. Many online converters upload the file to a server to process it. StatementToCSV reads the PDF inside your browser, so the statement never leaves your computer. See is it safe to upload bank statements?

3. Handle a whole year, not just one file

Bookkeepers and accountants rarely receive one statement. They receive a folder, sometimes with a month missing, a duplicate download or an interim statement that overlaps two monthly ones. The whole-year check catches each of those and explains every penny of difference across the year.

4. Export what your software expects

Excel wants separate paid in and paid out columns. Xero and QuickBooks want a single signed amount. StatementToCSV gives you each layout from the same checked data, so you don’t rearrange columns by hand.

5. Be honest about what it can’t do

No converter reads every layout perfectly. A trustworthy one tells you when it isn’t sure. StatementToCSV marks statements it can’t verify, says which banks have been tested on real statements (HSBC, NatWest and Starling) and which are in beta, and does not support scanned statements yet.

Edited statements

If you receive statements from other people, as a landlord, letting agent, lender or accountant, it helps to know when a PDF has been altered. The converter flags text typed over original figures and PDFs produced by word processors or online PDF editors rather than a bank’s statement system. It is a warning to look closer, not a verdict. Try it on a sample

The converter above includes fictional sample statements, including one with a missing row and a 12-month set with five planted problems. Run them to see exactly what the checks report before you use your own files.

Questions people ask

What is a bank statement converter?

A tool that reads the transactions from a bank statement, usually a PDF, and writes them to a spreadsheet-friendly file such as CSV, for Excel or accounting software.

Which is the most accurate bank statement converter?

Accuracy is best judged by checking, not by claims. Use a converter that reconciles every row against the printed running balance, so you can see that the result is complete.

Do I need to create an account?

No. The free converter works without sign-up, and nothing is stored.

Does it work on a Mac, a Chromebook or a phone?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser, including Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox. On a phone it works, though a larger screen is easier for reviewing results.
