How to spot a fake bank statement

Fake and altered bank statements are used to pass tenant referencing, loan applications and audits. Most can be caught with a few calm checks.

Try a fictional sample:

Works with text PDFs that have Date, Description, Paid in / Paid out (or Amount) and Balance columns. Scanned or photographed statements are not supported yet. The samples are fictional test data.

Check the arithmetic

This is the check most fakes fail. On a real statement, every running balance equals the previous balance plus money in, minus money out. The opening balance plus total money in, minus total money out, equals the closing balance. If any summary box shows totals, they match the transactions. A forger who changes a salary figure has to change every balance after it, and the summary, and the next statement’s opening balance. Converting the PDF above runs all of these checks in seconds.

Verify, don’t just inspect

The strongest checks don’t rely on the document at all:

Be fair

Genuine statements sometimes look odd: an unusual layout from a smaller bank, a PDF someone re-saved by mistake. Use warnings as a reason to ask questions, not to accuse. And handle applicants’ statements carefully; they are sensitive personal data. StatementToCSV reads them in your browser without uploading them anywhere.

Questions people ask

Can I check a bank statement for free?

You can convert it here and see whether the balances add up, free. Edited-statement detection is a Pro feature, free for everyone during the beta.

What is the most reliable sign of a fake statement?

Arithmetic that doesn’t add up: running balances, totals or summaries that don’t follow from the transactions.

Is it legal to ask for bank statements from a tenant?

Landlords and agents commonly ask for them as part of referencing. Handle them as personal data: keep them secure and only as long as you need them.

What should I do if I think a statement is fake?

Ask for verification another way, such as Open Banking or employer confirmation. If you believe fraud is involved, you can report it to Action Fraud.
