How to download bank statements from online banking

Every UK bank lets you download statements, but the option is rarely where you expect it. Here’s where to look, and how to save them so they convert cleanly.

A downloaded PDF statement is the official record of an account for a period, with an opening balance, every transaction and a closing balance. It’s what accountants, lenders and HMRC work from, and it’s what the converter reads. A transaction export or a screenshot of the app is not the same thing.

Step by step

  1. Use a computer if you canOnline banking websites usually give more control over dates and file saving than apps, and the file lands straight in your Downloads folder.
  2. Find the statements areaOpen the account, then look for Statements, View statements, Statements and documents or Documents. In apps, it is often in the account’s menu or settings.
  3. Choose the periodPick a monthly statement where you can. Custom date ranges work, but monthly statements are easier to check against each other.
  4. Save as PDFDownload or “share” the PDF and save it. Don’t print the page to a new PDF or take screenshots: the original file is the most reliable.
  5. Name it sensiblyRename it like Bank-Current-2026-03.pdf. The converter doesn’t need this (it reads dates from inside the file), but people do.

Bank-by-bank pages

Each of these pages describes where that bank keeps statements and any quirks of its layout:

If the statement you need isn’t there

Online banking only shows a limited history. For older statements, see how to get old bank statements. Statements for a closed account can also be requested from the bank.

Questions people ask

Is a downloaded PDF statement an official statement?

Yes. The PDF statements banks provide for download are the electronic version of your statement. Some organisations ask for statements to be certified or stamped by a branch; ask them if that applies.

Can I use a transaction export instead?

For your own use, often. When someone needs to see your statements, or you want the figures checked against official balances, use the PDF statement.

Why can’t I find statements in my banking app?

Some apps put them under account settings or documents. Try the bank’s website, or search the app’s help for “statements”.
